Santa Maria del Fiore by Filippo Brunelleschi

The Santa Maria del Fiore, also known as the Florence Cathedral, is a famous architectural structure known for showing advancements made during the Renaissance. It features a dome --which was a new concept back then -- along with showing the transition between the Gothic world and the Renaissance. It’s height exceeds that of any other church in Tuscany, and it has an octagonal arrangement of piers to show the attention paid to geometry at the time. Construction of the Santa Maria del Fiore began in 1446.

Filippo Brunelleschi was a famous architect, sculptor, and goldsmith from the Renaissance. Though he did not design many buildings during his lifetime, the buildings he did design are well known. Brunelleschi remained the chief architect of the project until his death.
